DALLAS -- Drivers can dramatically reduce their commute times by using Maryland’s
first all-electronic toll (AET) road, the Intercounty Connector (ICC)/MD 200,
with technology from Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (ACS), A Xerox Company.
Under a contract with the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), ACS designed,
developed and integrated the all electronic open road tolling system for Maryland’s
newest highway, allowing drivers to stay moving at posted highway speeds, rather
than slow down to move through a tolling booth. Payment for tolls will be collected
via drivers’ E-ZPass transponders, allowing traffic to continue moving freely
and openly.
“ACS’ ability to collect tolls at highway speeds will produce immediate benefits
and time savings for drivers,” said Randolph Brown, deputy executive secretary,
Maryland Transportation Authority. “We project that some travel times can be reduced
by up to seventy percent when using the ICC route as compared to travelling congested
local roads.”
ACS installed the overhead and roadside hardware and related software needed
for the AET to function. Off the road, ACS will handle system repair and maintenance,
as well as the operation of the customer service center for the ICC.
“This project shows where toll related transportation technology is clearly headed
– by going all-electronic, we’re reducing traffic congestion and lessening the
burden of the daily hectic commute,” said Ken Philmus, senior vice president and
managing director, ACS Transportation Systems and Services. “ACS’ expertise in
this area is helping drivers to gain back the time they’ve traditionally spent
stopping at toll booths and allowing transportation agencies to maximize mobility
on new and existing highways.”
The MDTA opened the first section of the ICC, a seven-mile stretch in the Washington
D.C. metropolitan area connecting Interstate 370 to Georgia Avenue (MD 97), to
the public Feb. 23. Drivers had the opportunity to test drive the road free-of-charge
until tolls went into effect March 7 at 12:01 a.m.
ACS is the largest provider of transportation technology services worldwide,
including parking, tolling, mass transit and photo enforcement services supporting
governments in 30 countries. ACS currently manages 1.4 billion toll transactions annually and 10 million
transponder accounts.
